Behind our campus we have about a mile of off campus apartments. Somewhere between 4-5 thousand students live there, including myself. Its a two lane road with a speed limit of around 50 or 55. Since the start of the school year alone 3 people have been hit by cars and there is a petition going around advocating for the installation of sidewalks. The county released a response a few days ago for the proposed solution. Taking the two lane road and turning it into a boulevard with a median and then putting in sidewalks. Proposed start date is 2016 at the earliest. 1st this needs more immediate action than 2016 three hit pedestrians in a single stretch of road in 2 months is a lot. Second, I'm not sure making the road bigger is really a smart move, but thats just me.

Spoiler alert: all governments are stupid.

No pavement and a 55 speed limit where that many people live? At the very least they can drop the limit to 30ish mph until they get started on construction.

Police presence is minimal at best, unless its Friday or Saturday night. So people generally are going upwards of 70 or more, a speed limit change sadly wouldn't help very much.

I dont know if you have speed cameras in the US? That would do the job. As much as I hate speed cameras they do work in situations like that.

On the one hand that sucks.
On the one hand that sucks. On the otherhand there was a guy who ran across a highway here and got hit by a car. Then the government rushed forward the this happened. It was disaster. 3 years late, way over budget.

I'm not interested in anything over dramatic like that, just the building of a simple sidewalk. I'd like to say thats to simple to fuck up, but I'll bite my tongue for fear of being wrong.

Speed cameras are rare. At best there are red light cameras. No way the state would allow them, civil liberties and muh freedom etc.

Never underestimate the governments ability to mess up. Local government especially. We have municipal elections soon. I looked at all the candidates in my ward, I don't like any.

Yeah, the local government hates the school as well. So you can never be too sure about how things are gonna go.

This has got to be the US, right? Why in the fuck is everything a 2 or 4 lane highway here? Sidewalks are rare but that's not the point really. We really need to slow our roads down, make stuff more pedestrian friendly.

That's a shame, they're pretty good for built up areas, just a complete pain on motorways and such.

Usually they're in big cities like L.A. and NY.

A two lane highway with no sidewalk for the large number of pedestrians?
How long as this road been like this because that is crazy.
There should be a sidewalk with a one metre gap between the sidewalk edge and the kerb side of the road.
